Ice-Lab

A work environment that's a world apart

A century after polar explorers first started working out of huts on the icy extremities of the earth, scientists in remote polar postings continue to endure difficult working and living conditions.

An Ice-Lab project is underway to design and build relocatable field accommodation and laboratory stations specifically for extreme environments.

An Antarctic research team, working under the direction of Professor Roy Fleetwood from the Victoria University of Wellington School of Design, is using the latest technology and design principals while endeavouring to create buildings with the lowest possible environmental footprint. The Ice-Labs aims to use energy exclusively from renewable resources.
